IDEAS
Since finding out our task, to make a music video, I've been subconsciously collecting and thinking of ideas so I'll use this post as an on going place to jot down any notes of ideas and initial thoughts of mine..
- birds eye view filming, create an image on the floor? the house and have the artist laid down as if he was sat down.. different way to look at it (from birds eye view filming that Paul McCartney did while i was watching magical mystery tour revisited documentry)
- use of magnifier glass over text, filmed produces more interesting visuals, so if we wanted to include any text would be a more interesting way of filming it.. (yoko ono use of her art 'yes' written in small text and when zoomed in on it during the mmt revisited)
- vivian by bruce connor, his use of cutting rates/fades/overlays
- image/photo/footage projection onto person/object
- window frames and picture frames just hanging in the sky/field
- film/edit it to look as if it's been filmed on film reel, as if it was footage from the 60's or 70's

AUDIENCE RESEARCH RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS
We carried out an online survey in order to collect data from audience online and as we are aged in the average audience age groups of indie artists our friends on social networks are essentially our desired audience therefore we shared the link to our survey on twitter, facebook and tumblr.

From looking at the results we have collected, it is clear that the optimum age is between 18-24 however there is still a high interest with 15-17 year old. This correlates with our artist demographics research. Therefore, this age range is our target audience. As we asked the audience what they thought expected to see in an indie music video, we wanted to find out what they believe the indie conventions in a music video are so we can cater our music video to their needs. The most popular way our audience get their music is from Itunes and CD's, therefore we will have to offer bonus features for our digipack to be a success. Doing this gave us an insight to our audience and what we have to do to meet their criteria.

- independence
- a genre full of music which can't be described solely as rock for example
- chilled/arty
- a genre which chooses to be against the mainstream. They usually create music which is not altered by a computer and the sounds usually come straight from the instrument.
- a diverse genre that combines aspects from rock, acoustic and country.
- music that is not part of the mainstream conventions
- experimental music
4. What do you expect to see in a indie music video?
- vintage
- nothing specific
- orange tints, an individual artist and conceptual imagery
- lots of 'indie' clothing, for example casual attire
- the artist playing/performing
- acoustic instruments, big emphasis on guitars
- outside setting, either in a little town or at the countryside/beach
- unique concepts
- give of a retro feel, look as if it was filmed back in the 60's on film reel

MAGAZINE ADVERT
Along with creating our music video and digipack we will also need to design a magazine advert for our artist and their music. Therefore we are starting to look in magazines for adverts that relate to artists and bands, saving them for when we look into this more and analyse them and start planning and designing our own advert.

FOCUS SHIFT
Another micro element my group wish to use within our music video is the effect of macro/close up focus shift. In a frame the camera changes focus from one object to another, usually from the effect of zooming and refocusing on a specific object. This technique not only looks very effective, it allows the footage to flow very smoothly and therefore engages the audiences attention to specific areas at certain points throughout. The video below, named 'Beautiful Clutter' incorporates this effect very well. The outcome is a beautiful filmed piece, and the content relates to what we want to film in our music video as vintage/retro objects such as film cameras feature in it and the whole product gives of a vintage vibe. I really like most if not all of the shots in the video and hope we can recreate some similarly effective shots in ours.

OUTDOORS/CARRYING OBJECTS/DAY TO NIGHT
Ben Howard's video for Keep Your Head Up, contains all three of these factors which we are thinking about using within our video as so far we have decided we would like to use an outdoor location. We've also noted down ideas about the artist carrying things ready to set up an outdoor house which can be seen in the video for keep your head up as he is seen carrying objects setting up a slide. As well as those two the video also goes from sunrise through the day which is something we intend to do in our music video as it is a common convention of indie music videos.
DIGIPACK
To go with our artists music video we will be making a digipack as well, luckily our preliminary task involved a digipack for an indie artist so we already have some background research to work on. A digipack is an important factor in connecting the artist to their audience as it connects the two together more. Our digipack needs to include a front cover, back cover, spine, disc cover, inlays and all the necessary legal words.
NARRATIVE WITHIN THE INDIE GENRE
In indie music videos there is a mixture of performance and narrative and the narrative is usually filmed in a different and somewhat contrasting location to the performance based footage. The narrative tends to link to a personal issue such as relationship problems rather than a widespread issue such as global warming as this makes the young audience able to relate to both the video and lyrics.
To be able to apply the concept of narrative theory to videos within my genre I'm going to look at a couple of indie music videos to gain a better understanding on how the narrative is portrayed and how the audience is positioned to identify with.
Kate Nash - Foundations
The video for the song shows the day 'and I know that I should let go but I can't..' They're holding hands just before these lyrics and then they stop holding hands during the words let go. There is also aspects of stop motion editing effect in the video as well which is relevant to us as as it is a technique we are thinking about using. The narrative is structured to be a casual, average day showing the relationship of the pair which relates to the lyrics as the artist talks about the 'cracks in our foundations'. Another reference to the lyrics is when she opens the fridge which is full of beer, and sings the lyrics 'have another beer then..' and where she says about being wound up, there is a footage of a toy being winded up. She's singing to the camera while still interacting and doing other things during the video. The conflict is basically about their relationship not going so well which is slightly reflected in the video when the socks separate and when they stop holding hands.

After researching into the indie genre it was clear, even after looking just a few videos, that most indie videos either contained the band or artist singing and playing instruments, usually acoustic guitars. As a performance is a big part of indie music videos, and music videos in general, we have decided that we want to include a performance from the artist not only to follow the indie conventions but to make the music video more personal to the target audience.
The music video to Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons is a perfect example of use of performing with instruments within their video. The song itself is classed as a indie/acoustic/country which is reflected through he use of instruments and locations. Throughout there is a lot of emphasis on the instruments being played by the use of close ups and in some cases extreme close ups.
